diagnost three months ago with idopathic cardiomyopathy

Berichtdoor tom1 » Di Nov 04, 2008 4:45 am

Hi corrij,

Thanks for replying to me with my registration information.
Here are my specifics:
I was diag. with idiopathic cardiomyopathy three months ago. My general doctor found it during a physical. I did not have many symptoms. I would get light headed when I stand up to fast when i felt tired and i felt a little fatigued. i had no idea anything was going on with my heart. He did an echo and it showed an ef of 20%. After that I shcheduled an appointment with a cardioloist. He also gave me an echo and said my EF was 35%. Then we sheduled a cath. The cath showed everything very clear and wide open and an ef of 30-35%.
I was working out before my diagnosis but i was lifting heavy weights. Now i do 45 minute on the olipticle machine 4-5 days a week and lift lower weight more reps.
Medication
2X100 Q10 day
2X500 l-carnintine day
2- multivitamens day
6.5 - generic coreg
2.5 - mg lisinopril
2x 1000 mg fish oil

I eat oatmeal with two tablespoons of flax seed and wheat germ with a yogurt every morning. I lost 15 pounds in the 5 weeks between my doctor appts. I was about 260 a year ago now I weigh 128. my height is 6"1"
My mental state is great. I always seem to do better when I HAVE A challenge in front of me.
I really feel great right now. I do not get light headed anymore and I have more energy then I have had in a long time.
I am scheduled to interview another cardiolist this friday. I don't feel any relationship with my current one. The nurse I saw on the last visit wanted me to stop taking the l-carnintine because she said the heart medicine and l-carnintine both work on the kidneys or liver. (forgot which one she said). I did not listen to her.

I really love your site and any recomendations would be great.

Thanks You

Hello Tom,

At first a warm welcome on this forum :D
It has succeeded, youre on the forum :D

You already taken some supplements so I will give you some information about it, and add some others.

About the Carnitine, wich form of it do you use?
The best carnitine for your heart is the propionyl carnitine or the acetyl-carnitine.
Carnitine is a amino-acid and it is important to take this on a empty stomach, a half hour before your meals or two hours after.You can take the three pills together or one before every meal.
The amount must be 3 x 500 mg a day,

L-Carnitine is made in the body from the amino acids lysine and methionine. It increases the use of fat as an energy source by transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they are ‘burned’ to release energy for body functions. The L-carnitine form may cause adverse side effects however. It is available in several different forms including propionyl-L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine. Propionyl-L-carnitine, through its enhancement of metabolism has been proven to prevent ischemia-induced heart dysfunction, and acetyl-L-carnitine has been suggested to delay the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. L-carnitine is found naturally in avocados, breast milk, dairy products, red meats (namely lamb and beef), and tempeh (fermented soybean product). A deficiency of L-Carnitine can cause muscle fatigue, cramps, or low blood-sugar levels.

About the Q10,

http://hart-en-vaatziekten-forum.orthom ... hp?t=11233

I would also advice you to start with Taurine 3 x 500 mg a day, this is also a amino-acid, so you must take this on a empty stomach(not together with the carnitine)

If you have any questions, don`t hesitate,

regards,
Corrij

Hi corrij,

I am very impressed with your speedy replies. I will get some taurine asap. I am a little confused about the l-carnitine I am taking. I cannot see what type it is. It is from Solgar and says (free form). It also says they are vegetable capsules. Is this the right kind or is this enough information?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

I always try to respond within 24 hours :D
Don`t forget to take 3x500 mg of carnitine, instead of 2 x 500 mg.
The Carnitine is one of the most importan supplement of the protocol.

Some questions,

Are you frequently tired?

Do you use lots of sugar?

Possible nutritional restrictions (salt, water, etc)

greetings,
Corrij

Corrig,

I have switched to 3x500 of the L-carnitine. I am going to get the taurine toady.

I usaually feel great for 4-5 days out of 7. Then I am tired for a day or two. I usaually skip the gym on these days and go to sleep early. This seems to recharge me. I have noticed on the days I am tired I get light headed eassier when I stand up. The days when my energy is good I never get light headed. I am on no Restrictions but I am watch my calorie and salt input. I like to cook so I am looking up healthy resipes and cooking them for the family.

Hi Tom,

The days when your feeling tired, is this in the weekend?
Do you still work?

Some people do not experience any symptoms until their cardiomyopathy is well advanced. Usual signs and symptoms of dilated cardiomyopathy include tiredness, shortness of breath, swollen ankles and abdomen, heart palpitations and dizziness and fainting during physical activity.. These may occur with or without exercise.
Signs and symptoms tend to progress over time unless the condition is treated.

Light-headedness can be the first sign of a health problem, such as anemia, low blood pressure or low blood sugar.
I think your beta-blocker is the reason of your light headedness. Some people feel drowsy, dizzy, or lightheaded when taking beta blockers.

Side effects
The most common side effects are dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, sleep problems, unusual tiredness or weakness, and decreased sexual ability. In men, this can occur as impotence or delayed ejaculation. These problems usually go away as the body adjusts to the drug and do not require medical treatment unless they persist or they interfere with normal activities. On the positive side, research in 2004 showed that use of beta blockers helps reduce risk for boen fractures.
More serious side effects are possible. If any of the following side effects occur, the physician who prescribed the medicine should be notified as soon as possible:
Other side effects may occur. Anyone who has unusual symptoms after taking beta blockers should get in touch with his or her physician.

Coreg is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins).

Coreg is used to treat heart failure and hypertension (high blood pressure). It may also be used after a heart attack to improve survival in certain patients.

Coreg side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
slow or uneven heartbeats;

feeling light-headed, fainting;

feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion;

swelling of your ankles or feet;

nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);

depression; or

cold feeling in your hands and feet.

Less serious Coreg side effects may include:

decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm;

sleep problems (insomnia);

tired feeling; or

anxiety, nervousness.

If you feel light-headed, lie down or lower your head between your legs. That will increase blood flow to your brain and heart and reduce your chances of fainting.

greetings,
Corrij
